Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves if their owners don't interact with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and can even bite. It is crucial to establish clear boundaries so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who love to play, climb and play. They require at least 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they are also great companions for children.
Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can cause a disturbance to those living near. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or near children who might be startled by their roar.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases, and tricks. This can be a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and realize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
For decades activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to go back to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member, on a plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself, not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that connect with their family members until death. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Health

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the whale that passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
